How to Change the Kernel

This document will aid in changing the current kernel to a kernel that is compatible with the COBOTTA Driver. This document will be completed using the the Ubuntu OS installed into the COBOTTA (another laptop or computer will not be needed for this document).

Step 1: Before changing the kernel, check to see the current resolution by opening a new terminal and entering the following into the terminal:	$ xrandr Note: The resolution will be used later if the resolution changes when installing the compatible kernel.
Step 2: Click on the Downloadable Kernels link and find a kernel that is compatible with the COBOTTA Driver. In this example, the current kernel being used is 5.4.0-58-generic and will be changed to 5.3.0-69-generic.	Note: To see the list of compatible kernels, go to the Installing the COBOTTA Driver document.
Step 3: After finding a compatible driver, click on the kernel to proceed onto to identifying the architecture type:
Step 4: Scroll down to the bottom of the webpage to select the architecture type as amd64 (the COBOTTA's CPU architecture):
Step 5: Click on the security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu link from the webpage to begin downloading the chosen kernel:
Step 6: Open the downloaded kernel file, when the file is opened, it will launch the Ubuntu Software application to begin installing the new kernel into the OS.
Step 7: Click on Install to begin installing the new kernel.
Step 8: After clicking on Install, the Authentication window will appear, enter the login password to begin installation.
Step 9: Wait for the installation process to be complete.
Step 10: Once the installation has been completed, open a new terminal and enter the following to reboot the COBOTTA:	$ reboot
Step 11: When the reboot has been completed, login into the COBOTTA and open a new terminal to enter the following to see if the new kernel has been installed:	$ uname -r Note: If the new kernel did not install after the reboot, go to the Booting into COBOTTA with a Compatible Kernel document to fix this issue.
